Roald Dahl was a British author and poet. He was born on 13 September 1916 in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales, England, and passed away on 23 November 1990, aged 74.

He is best known for his children's books, the majority of which were made to film. His most successful and memorable books include; James and the Giant Peach (1961), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), Fantastic Mr Fox (1970), The Twits (1980), George's Marvellous Medicine (1981), The BFG (1982), The Witches (1983) and Matilda (1988).

Matilda is a children's fantasy novel, written by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake and was published in 1988. The story focuses on a young girl named Matilda, who is a bright, intelligent girl for her age, yet she is ignored and treated poorly by her parents. She forms a strong bond with her teacher, Miss Honey and they work together against the evil headmistress Agatha Trunchbull. The themes in all of Dahl's work, is comical and has dark undertones, with standout characters and always contains a moral to the story.
