Phil Thompson is a British retired professional football player. He was born on 21 January 1954 in Kirkby, Lancashire, England.

He spent the majority of his career at Liverpool (1971-84), making 340 appearances, scoring 7 goals and being part of the team to earn the FA Cup (1973-74), FA Charity Shield (6x), European Cup (3x) and UEFA Cup (1972-73 / 1975-76). He also played for the England national team (1976-82), making 42 appearances and scoring 1 goal. Once he retired from playing on the pitch, he turned his experiences to assistant manager for Liverpool and has been appearing on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports).
