Richard Ashcroft is a British singer and songwriter. He was born on 11 September 1971 in Wigan, Lancashire, England.

He became publicly aware in 1990 when rock group The Verve formed and were a big part of the Britpop movement. Between 1990 and 2008, they were a successful group but had their troubles within the group and split up on three separate occasions. He went to pursue a solo career during those tough times, firstly in 2000, releasing his debut single, A Song for the Lovers, which reached number 3 in the UK charts. The accompanying album, Alone With Everybody, hit the charts at number 1, received platinum status and had great reviews from critics and fans alike. Since then he has released a further 4 albums, 3 of which hit the top 3 spot in the UK charts, and he also formed a new band called RPA & The United Nations of Sound.
