Mikhail Gorbachev is a Russian former President of the Soviet Union. He was born on 2 March 1931 in Privolnoye, North Caucasus Krai, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.
He was very active in the political avenue, especially during 1985-91 where he was Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (1988-89), Chairman of the Supreme Soviet (1989-90), General Secretary of the Central Committee (1985-91) and served as President of the Soviet Union (1990-91). He attempted to bring openness and restructure back to the Soviet Union, trying to better the future of Russia itself. He would be successful at introducing openness, but restructuring the Soviet economy was not accepted as well as he'd hoped. He did inspire nations and republics within Russia to declare their independence and free themselves from Communism. However, in 1991 things would change drastically, with the Communist party trying to remove him from his role, and though at first unsuccessful in their attempts, Gorbachev would realise that the Soviet Union would come to dissolve and ended up resigning as a result.
